Story by Danielle Fox
In the foothills of Mount Koya grows a precious herb with a rare history. An ancient Japanese legend, passed down from one generation to the next, tells the story of Kobo Daishi, a monk of virtue, who founded one of Japan’s most renowned monasteries. According to folklore, his many talents included purifying water and restoring life to the dead.
Discovering a legend
The kanji character of “en 延” means extension and “mei 命” means life. Treasured for its substantial healing properties since ancient times, the Enmei herb’s roots run deep in the Japanese folklore. According to legend, the herb was used by Kobo Daishi to revive the weary and heal the sick.
A BOTANICAL OF LEGEND
Each Enmei herb is being handpicked on auspicious days called “Tenshanichi” on Japanese calendar, which can be as few as only three days in a single year. It is believed that “Tenshanichi” is the most auspicious time of the year, when the mystical power of the universe is at its peak- to imbue the process with good energy. That is why it is truly legendary.
